Ümit Berksoy | accessories inspired from a turkish-ottoman era
Gleaming antiques in brass, silver, and gold, boxes, jewels, chalices, and cutlery; we are inside Ümit Berksoy’s shop of inspiration. Located within the Grand Bazaar, we take a trip back through time in this handcraft shop of jewels.
"These were once used for drinking coffee, the thin basin inside made from porcelain, is the coffee cups, let’s say, holder. And this is a golden powder compact made in the 1930s. A ladies compact... The reds are ruby and the greens emerald and in between, and the white in between is a mix of diamond and brilliant. Along the tail are diamonds.
With a friend as a trustee, I began work at the Grand Bazaar as a sales clerk who knew languages. I offered my boss a partnership. For about 25 years or so we have worked together, continuing to broaden our profession. Either my created designs, or genuine old jewels that we’ve taken and put in our display, or goods that we have recreated from old jewels. I use French velvet inside the boxes I make. Box sizes suitable enough for any size animal to sit themselves inside. So we say look, that is, the butterfly you’ve bought comes with its own cage, and so on, we have a thing like this, okay, or a bird, or a lion, anyway. Like that… It falls into place."
